What Leo thinks when he’s chillin’ outside:
Look at my big, lion-like paw! I’ll swipe at you if you come too near! (but I’m nice and I don’t use my nails)

Pretty clouds above…hey, that one looks like a fish. Yum, fish. (ok, I was really rubbing against the armrest to put my scent on it. My chair! Mine!)

Awwww, it’s so nice out, I could stay out here all day!

There are three basic personality factors in cats: The kind who run up when you say hello and rub against you in cheap romance; the kind who run away certain that you mean to ravish them; and the kind who just look back and don’t move a muscle. I love all three kinds. ~Eve Babitz, Author

Happy Wednesday, everyone!
Here’s Leo looking extra cute, with an unintentional blur, as there was no flash used and he was moving. But the result is really good, we think. The blur gives the picture a soft, almost paint-like quality.
He was asking for a hug, as usual (and he got one!)
This picture is featured on the navigation bar of our main site, although we tinted it there to make up for the blurriness.

Great news! We had not checked on Luna’s blog for a few days, since our hearts would break each time we saw a post that she was still missing (our friend in Spain has been missing since August 21st when arriving at the veterinarian’s place, the vet opened the car door with a dog and Luna ran out into a forest). But when we visited today, we saw that there was a post from Sunday, 9/24 that she had come home! Hip, Hip, Hooray!! (sniff, sniff - tears of joy!) Her nose is injured, but she seems okay from the pictures (see below). Her guardian Angels were watching over her! It just took them a long time to help her find her way home.
Welcome home, Luna! (Benvenuto a Casa, Luna!)*

Her poor injured nose, but safe at home with her toys

Taking a much needed rest!
*sorry if this is wrong, our Spanish is not very good

Zoo hopes for big cat litter
Melbourne Zoo observed its fourth International Tiger Day on September 24 in honour of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. Few more than 400 Sumatran tigers survive in the wild, and a third of all tiger habitats worldwide had been lost.
The zoo is home to two captive-bred Sumatran tigers. The male, Ramalon, was born in Sydney in 1995 and was brought to Melbourne in 1999. The female, Binjai, came to Melbourne in 2004 from Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands, where she was born in 2002. The pair have mated, although it’s too early to tell whether Binjai is expecting.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

South Richmond Firefighters save cherished cat
Eva Raymond, 56 is blind. Her husband passed away in 2003, and then she lost her sister-in-law and housemate to cancer. Her cat, Blacktop, offered her love and comfort through it all. However, after her sister-in-law’s burial, Raymond had guests over at her house, which spooked Blacktop, who somehow got herself stuck between the walls of the house.
Animal Control wasn’t able to find Blacktop, and after 2 days, Raymond called the fire department. The firefighters opened holes in the house for 90 minutes, as Blacktop kept running away. Raymond reportedly said that it didn’t matter how many walls were knocked down, as long as she got her cat back.
They finally found her behind a closet wall. Although dehydrated, Blacktop was back to her old self within a week.

Cat saves owner’s life
A cat in Littleton, Colorado, seemingly predicted the onset of a serious illness. Lynda Larsen’s cat started to insistently knead her left breast one Sunday morning. Because of her cat’s attention to that spot, she found a lump and called her doctor. Within days, she was diagnosed with breast surgery and had undergone surgery in both breasts. The cancerous tumor was found in the exact location her cat focused on.

An active cat is a happy cat
The pet experts running the Kitty Kindergarten program at Proper Paws University, a pet training business in Wisconsin, urge that training your cat and encouraging it to have a more active indoor lifestyle will promote emotional health for the cat, and improve the cat-owner partnership. The myth that cats should be left to their own devices is harmful, as that may produce a very unhappy and bored cat.
Using positive reinforcement such as food and praise, cats can also be very trainable, and many common problems such as biting, scratching, and refusing the use the litterbox often stem from miscommunication between the cat and owner.
“We don’t know how to speak cat and they don’t know how to speak human,” says Nila McKendra, dean of Proper Paws.
Kitty Kindergarten also trains kittens in shelters to help them stay at their new homes longer, as many times people give up cats due to “behavior problems” that are a result of inadequate attention and training.

Leo’s 2 cents

Training a cat?! How dare you even suggest the idea! We train our humans! That’s the way it works, period. Now where’s my lunch? What is taking so long?

Paging Dr. Catnip
Yes, hello, Room Service? This is Bambi. I’d like to order some catnip, assorted treats and a side of attention from my humans please. Stat.

Can I have some more?
Wait! Wait! Order some more of this stuff…this yummy fish. Oh, and some hugs?! Is that on the menu? Bambi’s been hogging the blog this week, as I’ve been too busy being noisy and causing trouble. -Leo

We don’t know who these cats are (we wish we did!), but isn’t this so adorable?!?! We can’t remember where we found this, so if anyone would like to tell us what the proper photo credit is, we’d be happy to put it on. Just look at the kitten’s tummy and the blissful expression on the Mama cat’s face!
We really love this one, hope you do, too!

Whew! Thanks to Cecilia for letting us know that nobody could comment on our site for a few days! We were feeling very lonely.
Crisis has been solved, the human blogger must have done something silly with one of the template files, but it’s been fixed.
Thanks all! Now I can relax and just enjoy this comfy red flannel blanket-shirt.

P.S. Our “Photos” page is not working yet - struggling with the falbum plugin - and neither are the links in the sidebar of “random photos,” so please bear with us!

OK, we might not do an artsy post every Wednesday, but we felt like it this week. Look at how handsome I look with the sunbeam over my head and my neck turning gracefully. ~sigh~ cats are so beautiful, if I may say so.

We wrote a few days ago (”Trying A New Cat Litter“) that we were going to try out Purina’s Yesterday’s News since we weren’t thrilled about Swheat Scoop Natural Cat Litter’s barn-like smell that wasn’t very good with odor control. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out quite so well. Yesterday’s News was great with odor control, and as the advertising promised, it did absorb moisture extremely well. Leo & Bambi didn’t have any problems adjusting to it. However, the fact that it didn’t clump was a problem. It seems a little unsanitary as it doesn’t clump, so our kitties can just paw at it and distribute the soiled pellets everywhere in the pan. Also, because of the dark color, it’s rather difficult to clean. In addition, one ends up having to dispose the entire area of the soiled pellets, resulting in throwing out more pellets (I guess that’s good for Purina since that means you have to buy more).
So we’re going to switch back to a litter we used way back in the day… Arm & Hammer’s Super Scoop.
