Make the Call to Save Horses! We only have days left for the U.S. Senate to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 1915)! The House of Representatives voted 263-146 on Sept. 7 to pass H.R. 503. Now it's time for the Senate to act by passing S. 1915, which is sponsored by Senators John Ensign (R-Nev.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.). We must send a very clear message to Congress to pass a permanent ban on horse slaughter. Call your two U.S. Senators directly or call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121. All you need to say is: "I am a constituent and I am calling to ask that my Senator immediately protect our horses from slaughter and cosponsor S. 1915, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I am very concerned about American horses and I don't want them slaughtered." Let the Humane Society know you called! Fill in the form on the right to help us track the response. Ask for Truth in Fur Labeling! The U.S. House of Representatives is considering legislation, H.R. 4904, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2006, which would close a loophole that allows garments featuring fur valued at less than $150 to be sold without identifying it as animal fur or specifying the species of animal or country of origin. Without proper labeling, consumers can't always tell if an item contains real fur or faux fur -- and today's processing techniques make it nearly impossible for consumers to tell the difference. That's why a simple, honest label is so important. By requiring a label, H.R. 4904 will allow consumers to make educated choices about whether or not to wear fur. California: Protect Animals in Pet Stores California legislators have recently passed legislation (A.B. 2862) to establish standards of care for animals sold in pet stores. This legislation, introduced by Assemblymember Mark Ridley-Thomas, will require the Department of Consumer Affairs to adopt regulations for the care and handling of companion animals sold to the general public. A.B. 2862 passed the Assembly on May 31 and the Senate on August 23. The Assembly concurred with Senate amendments on August 30 and the bill now goes to the governor. Please take action today!

Urge Your Representative to End Animal Fighting Sponsored by Rep. Mark Green (R-WI), this bill increases penalties to a felony level for the interstate traffic in animals for dog fighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog fights and the barbaric weapons used in cockfights. This is important because prosecutors are reluctant to spend time and money on misdemeanor cases. Learn how to contact your U.S. representative about this important issue.

Tell the Navy to stop harming whales with high-intensity sonar Although the Navy agreed to limit its use of low-frequency sonar, it continues to blast the world's oceans with mid-frequency sonar, which can be just as harmful to whales and other marine mammals. Most recently, Navy training exercises off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, in early July coincided with a stampede to shallow water by a pod of up to 200 melon-headed whales. Melon-headed whales (which resemble dolphins) usually stay in deep water and are not known to beach themselves. Although concerned locals in kayaks and canoes were eventually able to herd most of the whales back out to sea, one young whale did become stranded and die. It's too soon to know for certain whether the sonar was the direct cause of the pod's distress, but the incident was similar enough to previous strandings caused by sonar that it warrants a full investigation by the Navy. NRDC has sent a letter to the Navy, demanding that it stop using high-intensity, mid-frequency sonar in a way that harms whales. You can help by sending the Navy your own letter. Tell the Navy to turn off the noise.

PETA(People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Action Alerts

Please Help Monkeys at Vanderbilt University! When a whistleblower at Vanderbilt University contacted PETA with an internal e-mail that indicated that brain surgeries were conducted on monkeys without general anesthesia, PETA sprang into action. Vanderbilt has run afoul of federal animal welfare laws in recent years; in fact, official government documents obtained by PETA reveal that, in 2005, the university was cited for violations of 13 different Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations. Our investigation of those violations exposed Jeffrey D. Schall as one of Vanderbilt's most notorious repeat offenders with regard to animal abuse, so his name was quite familiar to us when it appeared on the informant's accompanying note implicating him in yet another appalling violation. Schall's federally funded experiments use approximately $1.5 million taxpayer dollars per year and involve cutting off the tops of monkeys' skulls in order to insert wires and posts and attach metal coils to their eyes. Schall was suspended from animal research for one month in 2004 after he performed unauthorized surgery on a monkey, deprived animals of fluids, and failed to sanitize a feces-covered primate-restraint chair. That same year, Schall threatened an animal care technician for reporting to the university veterinarian that an animal's collar had become entangled with the bottom bars of the cage. Write polite letters to Vanderbilt Chancellor Gordon Gee and Jeffrey Schall.
